We interrupt this blog....
Dear readers:
My weekly pithy post is being temporarily pre-empted by a request.
Got a call from one of my girlfriends - another one of my friends has a dad who will likely pass away before the weekend is out.
Donna's dad was a great guy - he reminded me of my own dad - he was brilliant, insightful, and a no-nonsense-bad-ass-mofo. When my parents separated, he was more of a dad to me than my own dad. Over the last couple of decades, he's been ravaged by a series of strokes, and has been relegated to a motorized scooter. But that never dimmed his spirit. The last time I saw him, he told me (in his own way, as he could no longer speak) how beautiful my girls were, and how proud he was of me.
The other day, he was cruising around his retirement community in his scooter, when the scooter went down an incline, jumped the curb, he fell and hit his head, and then the scooter fell on top of him.
He's had no brain activity since yesterday.
I haven't yet spoken to Donna, but she's beside herself as you can imagine. She is an only child and is a true "daddy's girl". She and her mother will be making the heart-wrenching decision to turn off her father's life support.
I'm not the sort of gal who cries at wakes. But I think I'll be crying at this one.
Please send your good vibes and prayers out to Donna, her mom, and her dad Vinnie - I know you don't know them...but you know me, and Donna is like my sister - I've known her for over twenty years...and I can't imagine standing next to her while she buries her father. But that is precisely what I'll be doing.
I promise to be back next week with more cheerful topics.

My thoughts & prayers are with your friend. I was a 'Daddy's Girl' as well, and when my dad got sick and passed it nearly killed me. Just remember to be strong for her, be there for her when necessary & care for her.

I went through this with my best friend earlier this year, having lost my dad 9 years ago. Something changes when they are gone, but the memories of having known them and impacted one another's lives are so comforting and strengthening. Michele sends comfort as well.
